Biocomposting and soil conditioning

Primary objective of composting and soil production is to utilise the separately collected biowaste that comes to the Landfill. This waste undergoes an aerobic biological treatment process, which takes place in closed Thöni dynamic modules (TDM) with biofilters in the first, intensive stage. The closed facility was built with full process control and odour reduction.
The final product of biocomposting is used, among other things, as covering material at the Jakuševec/Prudinec Landfill.
Facility processes 2000 tonnes of biodegradable waste a year:
  • Biodegradable waste from households (~ 726 tonnes/year)
  • Green waste (~ 987 tonnes/year)
  • Market waste (fruits, vegetables) (~ 103 tonnes/year)
  • Processing biowaste (~ 185 tonnes/year)
End products of biocomposting are:
  • Ready-made compost - high-quality fertiliser in agriculture, gardening and plantation planting
  • Sieved sludge - used for soil cultivation
  • Metal waste - recycled and disposed of in an adequate way (mineral construction waste)
Soil production
This is a project in which soil is produced according to a predefined procedure. Compost is produced in an aerobic process from separately collected waste (branches, bark, leaves, sawdust, paper, biosludge and other compatible materials). The compost is then mixed with soil in a recipe that guarantees the production of natural quality soil. The material thus obtained is used as covering material and in soil cultivation. The facility has an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes/year.
Description of the technology used:
Prepared green waste is mixed with small amounts of different sludge in the process of decomposition. It is turned over frequently and decomposes until final maturation. Final maturation occurs during the decomposition due to repeated turning of the material.
Initially, the material for processing is stacked into trapezoidal piles placed at the top of the air intake element using a loader. The specially constructed elements are inserted into the foundation locally to allow wetting and homogenisation using a trapezoidal pile turner. Decomposition process is managed by regular aeration and turning of the material.
The air intake system consists of:  
  • Air intake duct
  • Fan station.
Later stage decomposition system - a total of 4x4 trapezoidal piles are planned, each measuring 770 m3 in volume. One air intake duct will supply 2 trapezoidal piles (120 m). The air intake ducts are also used to introduce water. They are constructed from square stainless-steel pipes (15 x 15 cm): 
Maturation and storage:
After fine preparation of the material using the sieve installation that was used in coarse preparation (changing the size of the openings), the material is taken away immediately and used as soil cultivation material at the local spreading site.
The end product of the facility consists of:    
  • Ready-made compost - it is used at the local spreading site as a soil cultivation layer.
  • Sieved sludge - it goes back to processing or is used for soil cultivation.
Biokomposting plant is managed by the branch Zrinjevac.
